In the past couple of years we have had some newbies join our Letterfest Team. Thought it was above time we started introducing them!
Meet Laura – Her role is primarily to ensure the smooth running of the studio, ensuring illustrations get printed ready for mounting and framing each day. She also works on the art prints and new designs.
What’s your role in Letterfest?
I primarily ensure that all of the illustrations/art prints get printed ready for mounting
and framing each day. I also work on the art prints. Its a busy studio with daily deadlines where we have to print and frame for courier pick ups at the end of the day – so you have to be good at juggling and working to short deadlines.
I started as an apprentice Graphic Designer in a little agency in Mid Devon.Following this I moved on to work as a Paste-Up Artist for a group of newspapers in Somerset before moving to Barnstaple to work for the North Devon Journal where I was a Typesetter and went on to become Production Supervisor. Craving a more design-led role I went on to work for a national advertising agency as a Graphic Designer and became Studio Manager. After 10 years I moved to a design agency where I worked for 9 years designing for a diverse range of local and national clients.
What have been the highs of your career (so far!)
I’ve always enjoyed the buzz of a deadline and the final stages of getting a large job off to print. It’s very satisfying working with a team of like minded people in a creative environment.
Having always worked on more corporate clients, it’s really lovely to work on products that will find themselves on people’s walls and in their homes. It’s also great to work in such a dog-friendly place although I’ve yet to inflict my terrier Bisley on the team!
I love the mid-century modern trend, particularly the simplicity of Scandinavian design. I really enjoy visiting small art galleries and finding quirky little things to decorate my house. My Dad was in lighting design so I was fascinated at early age by his technical drawings and stylised draughtsman’s handwriting – he definitely inspired me to go into the design field. My husband also inspires me – as a musician, writer and publisher he’s one of the most dedicated and talented people I’ve ever met. I really enjoy working with him on his new book design, marketing campaigns and exhibiting at music trade shows.
What is your favourite Letterfest product?
The pet portraits are lovely – we have some very talented illustrators. I also really like the typographic art prints, they’re very much in keeping with the style of design I favour.
